Maximize Windows
One thing that was hard to get used to is the lack of function to be able to view a window full screen, sometimes I want to just see one window not a bunch of overlapped windows, I can drag it as big as I can, but I don’t quite understand what the green button is supposed to do, it makes a windows bigger (sometimes).. I know I know mac zealots..
OS X Updates
One thing that has always bugged me about Apple OS X is that it seems every year or so there is a new version that you have to buy, Apple Zealots pick on Microsoft because its taking so long for them to release Vista, truth be told XP works pretty well, it has its share of security issued I agree, but back when it was it the early stages of development it really wasn’t made to be secure, just ma
Spotlight
In the last version of OS X they introduced a very useful feature for finding files and things called Spotlight, it allows you to quickly search the computer for about anything, it searches file names, folder names, applications, along with meta data of items.
Mac NTFS
Coming from a lifetime of Windows I have external hard drives laying around that I thought I’d use for extra storage on my imac via USB, well I had a ton of Music MP3’s that I ripped directly from CD’s, so I took the drive and plugged it the USB port and viola the drive mounted on the desktop and I was able to play the music, I changed the location in iTunes of where the library get stored (so it didn’t try and move all the files onto the local drive.
FTP Client for Mac
In my everyday job I transfer tons of data through FTP, on my Windows machines I normally just used a command prompt.
Slow Safari
With my switch to Apple one thing that seemed odd was how slow it seemed, now granted I started on an old iMac so I accepted it being slow, then stepped up to a current PowerBook 17” with a gig of ram, sitting next to what I would say is a equivalent speed Windows computer the web browsing was painfully slow, it seemed worse at times depending on the update level of OS X… My mac guru buddy tho
Apple Multiple Users
One awesome thing about Apple OS X is the way they do the Multi user, On Windows XP you set up a new user either limited or administrative rights and you are able to see all other users files, on OS X when you log in as another user you not only can’t see their folders or files, but you can’t even tell if there are even other users registered on the machine… That’s security..
Apple - Linksys
I end up the go-to guy for most people I know and people they know for computer setup questions. I recently went to someone’s house to setup their wireless router, I have setup a fair number of them over the years, so this time I grab my PowerBook and head out.
Orb
Well once again I find Apple has backed me into a corner on an application I really love. I originally bought a “Slingbox” and didn’t care for it at all, as a matter of fact it hardly worked… So after searching around a little I found an application for my PC called “Orb” you run an orb server on your machine and you can do all kinds of things such as I am able to watch all of my Tivo recorded and saved programs from anywhere in the world even on the mac, I have used it for a pilot friend of mine so he can watch Motorcycle races when he is stuck in places like China.
Packages
I have written about installing programs before and never got into much detail, one thing I should have mentioned is that I was confused why I could drag what ever program on the desktop and it would run fine, or into the application folder, or where ever it happens to land, and the same with “uninstalling” a program, just drag it in the trash and its gone, I always thought it was so cool how
